Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a young infant, Ford struggled with anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by word associations. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that the school was not suitable for her. Ford later applied to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time she was already making her television debut in a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She worked on stage regularly, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. However, Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
